Drugs and driving

There is a terrifying danger of driving whilst under the influence of drugs, and as statistics have proved it can be fatal. Drugs impair the senses, influence driver behaviour and sometimes diminish co-ordination much the same way as alcohol.

  • Statistics show drug driving is now more common than drink driving among the under 40s.
  • A Home Office study conducted in 2001 revealed 275,000 people between 16 and 24 admitted taking Ecstasy, cocaine or heroin every month.
  • Drug traces have been found in one in five people killed on the roads.
  • More than 2000 people a year are attested for drug-driving offences and nearly one in ten young drivers have driven while high on banned substances.
  • Evan legally prescribed drugs can make drivers impaired to drive safely

Experts say one marijuana cigarette has the same effect on driving as the amount of alcohol needed to take a motorist just over the current drink drive limit.
