Highway Development Plan

This scheme is safeguarded by the County Council but not currently in the authority’s 5 year Local Transport Plan. The original scheme consisted of two sections:-

  • The St John’s Area Relief Scheme and
  • the Prebend Street Area Relief Scheme.

There are a number of issues that need to be resolved before further consideration is given to these schemes including the current Bedford Town Centre Study and the East West Rail| proposal.

 St John’s Area Relief Scheme

A route from a new junction close to Cardington Road / Fenlake Road / Longholme Way towards Elstow Road along the disused railway line, then onto the Prebend Street junction with Cauldwell Street. The route would require a realignment of the Marston Vale railway line and reconstruction of a number of bridges.

Prebend Street Area Relief Scheme

A route between the Prebend Street / Cauldwell Street junction and the Ashburnham Road / Bromham Road junction avoiding the existing Prebend Street / Midland road junction.
