What does it say and how is it funded

The full text of the Local Transport Plan can be viewed on this website. In summary, the new Bedfordshire Local Transport Plan sets out our strategy for transport in the County, and how and where we plan to spend the money allocated to us. This covers all modes of transport, such as roads, buses, railways, footpaths, cycling, all aspects of how we move around the County. In our new Local Transport Plan, our vision for transport in Bedfordshire can be summarised as:

  • Delivering our existing commitments – Delivering our existing projects, such as the Ridgmont Bypass, Elstow Park and Ride, and the Bedford Western Bypass
  • Consolidating our position – Improving the condition of our existing transport networks, and making better use of them
  • Preparing for Growth – Bedfordshire is situated in a growth area, so we need to investigate the possible impacts and opportunities of future growth, and how this will affect Bedfordshire's transport network

The Government allocates us money to spend on Local Transport. How much we get is dependent upon numerous factors, including public transport patronage, levels of congestion, Bedfordshire's place in a growth area, and how well we have delivered Local Transport Plan projects in the past.

After recently receiving some financial planning guidelines from the Government, we estimate that around £50m will be available for us to spend on the Local Transport Plan over the next 5 years
