Recycling in Bedfordshire

Recycle NowBedfordshire County Council is the Waste Disposal Authority for Bedfordshire working in partnership with the Bedford Borough| (new window), Mid Beds| (new window) and South Beds| (new window) District councils as Waste Collection Authorities. Its overall responsibilities are to:

  • Let contracts to disposal operators for the disposal of waste collected by Waste Collection Authorities 
  • Manage the contract for the Materials Recycling Facility at Elstow
  • Provide facilities for the disposal of bulky household waste and recycling (there are five Household Waste Recycling Centres around the county)
  • Provide education to the public on recycling and waste issues
  • Manage initiatives to reduce and recycle waste
  • Co-ordinate publicity and promotion of recycling schemes across the county
  • Provide support to the Community Recycling Sector
  • Management of "closed" county landfill sites
  • Delivery of the 'Municipal Waste Strategy for Bedfordshire'
  • Provide compost sites for use by the Waste Collection Authorities

The Waste Collection Authorities collect household and recyclable waste, deliver waste and recycling containers (bins and bags), prepare recycling plans and run local recycling sites like bottle and clothes banks.
