Waste Strategy for Bedfordshire and Luton

The vast majority of waste managed in Bedfordshire and Luton is currently disposed of via landfill. New UK and European policies and legislation for waste management indicate that this will no longer be acceptable in the future. We need to find more effective ways of dealing with waste; from reducing the amount we produce in the first place, to recovering as much value as possible from the waste we do produce.

In response to these needs, all the local authorities with responsibility for waste management and planning in the Beds and Luton area have jointly developed a strategic vision for the way we should manage our waste in the future.

The partner authorities are:

Bedfordshire County Council| (new window)
Bedford Borough Council| (new window)
Mid Beds District Council| (new window)
South Beds District Council| (new window)
Luton Borough Council| (new window)

The Bedfordshire and Luton Waste Strategy sets out our vision for dealing with waste from now until the year 2020.

The strategy is the result of detailed research. Research work undertaken is summarised in three technical reports:

PDF Icon Baseline Data Report| (PDF document opens in new window): Summarises the current waste management context in Beds and Luton, together with relevant national and European policy and legistlation.

PDF Icon Stakeholder Participation Report| (PDF document opens in new window): Outlines the process of public and 'stakeholder' participation which was undertaken to inform development of the strategy.

PDF Icon Analysis of Future Options| (PDF document opens in new window): This report takes the findings of the Baseline and Stakeholder Participation studies, and projects a set of alternative scenarios for the future management of waste in the Beds and Luton area.

A consultation document was published in February 2001 and responses received were considered in production of the final strategy.

We received 46 detailed PDF Icon responses to the consultation document| (PDF document opens in new window).

Strategic Sustainability Appraisal

The strategic options for Bedfordshire municipal waste were subject to an appraisal of their implications for environment and sustainability. The results of this analysis are detailed in the documents below.
