Promoted walks

There are 14 waymarked circular walks across some of the most attractive and interesting parts of Bedfordshire. Most walks are between 2 and 11 miles long. There are also several designated regional routes in the county.

Users of the Lea Valley Way, please note that the section between Luton and Someries Castle will be unavailable until at least April 2007 due to continuing work under the East Luton Corridor Improvements.

Logo: Let's go! Bedfordshire Promoted Routes and Sites|
Web site launched in 2005 that provides information and map/leaflet downloads for places to walk, ride, cycle or unwind at over 100 outdoor locations in Bedfordshire. The leaflets have been produced by a wide range of groups interested in promoting countryside access.

Long Distance Routes
Greensand Ridge Walk
This 40 mile walk passes through some of the most attractive parts of Bedfordshire, from Leighton Buzzard in the west to Gamlingay just over the Cambridgeshire border in the east. The Walk can be covered in easy sections.

Icknield Way Path|
The Icknield Way Path passes through south Bedfordshire as it follows part of the oldest road in Britain. This route is only for walkers but horseriders can use the Icknield Way Trail.

Icknield Way Trail
The Icknield Way Trail is a multi-use recreational path which forms part of the Icknield Way long distance riders route from Norfolk to Wiltshire via the Chilterns in south Bedfordshire. For more details please contact the North Chilterns Trust on 01582 412225.


Ouse Valley Way is a 150 mile promoted route starting in Northamptonshire and running through Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk to the sea at King's Lynn.

From Turvey at the Northants border the route winds in large loops around a number of peaceful villages to Bedford. The Way then follows mostly hard surfaces to Willington and Roxton. Here the route diverts away from the river through the villages of Chawston and Wyboston before reaching Eaton Socon in Cambridgeshire.

Stevington Country Walk
3 mile stretch of the former Bedford - Northampton railway between Bromham and Stevington having views over the Ouse Valley and links with Stevington Windmill.

Directions: west of Bedford on the Stevington to Bromham road.

Bedford to Sandy Country Way.
The Country Way currently exists along the former Bedford - Sandy railway from Bedford, crossing the Willington - Gt. Barford road to Blunham and then over River Ivel into Sandy. It is open to cyclists, users of manual wheelchairs and walkers between Bedford and Sandy and to horseriders between Bedford and Church End, Willington.

The Country Way forms part of the Milton Keynes - Bedford - Sandy National Cycle Network route developed by the Forest of Marston Vale.

Cycling in the Countryside
Bedfordshire is ideal for cycling and a leaflet, produced with assistance from the , gives details of circular routes around some of the county's most attractive areas, using quiet country roads and off-road cycle paths. Most of the routes link in with urban areas or country parks. National Cycle Routes 6, 12 and 51 are under development and will run through Bedfordshire.
