The range of OFSTED's inspection activities has grown since its inception under the Education (Schools) Act 1992. Subsequent legislation has expanded Ofsted's role to include inspections of Local Education Authorities, nurseries and Initial Teacher Training. From April 2001, OFSTED has begun inspecting sixth form, tertiary, general further education and specialist colleges.
