Childcare Sufficiency Assessment

The Childcare Act 2006 places new duties on local authorities - firstly, to assess the level of childcare provided in the area, and secondly to work to ensure there is enough childcare of the right type for families who need it.

Bedfordshire County Council has now published its ‘Childcare Sufficiency Assessment 2007/08’.

The Childcare Sufficiency Assessment involved analysing the demand for childcare, mapping the supply of childcare and identifying any gaps in childcare provision within the County. The process also involved consulting parents, providers, employers and children to assess the need for childcare in Bedfordshire.

The assessment of childcare provision is designed to enable Bedfordshire County Council to identify gaps in the provision of childcare, and establish plans to meet the needs of parents and carers.

The Childcare Sufficiency Assessment will be subject to annual reviews with a new assessment undertaken on a three-year basis to take account of changes in population, employment patterns and childcare provision.
