GCSE results celebrations at John Bunyan School
21 August 2008
Students and staff at John Bunyan Upper School are celebrating this morning, after receiving their GCSE results.
The percentage of students achieving five or more A* to C grades including English and Maths (the criterion by which the government judges schools) has more than doubled compared with the 2007 results, and is among the best the school has achieved. 35.5 % of students achieved at least five A* to C grades.
Five times as many students took the Science double award this year compared with last year. In 2009, nearly all students will take the double award, giving them the equivalent of two GCSEs.
Many students from the school have achieved outstanding results. These include Dewan Choudhury, Varun Kumar and Deepak Mehmi, who passed their AS maths exam a year early. Dewan received one of the top five Maths GCSE results in the country last year. Louise Edis and Emma Nicholls achieved an amazing 18.5 GCSE passes each.
Head of School, Ursula Byrne, said: “This is yet another boost for the school. Students and staff have worked extremely hard this year and they deserve the success.
“Plans are underway for the school to become an academy in 2010 and these results are just the beginning for us. We are at a truly exciting period at John Bunyan and our improvement agenda will be going from strength to strength!”
The GCSE results follow the school’s pleasing A level results. 89% of students passed this year - an 11% increase on last year.
Cllr Rita Drinkwater, Bedfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “Congratulations to all staff and pupils at John Bunyan Upper School. This improvement has set a strong foundation as the school starts to develop its exciting plans to become an Academy. Well done!”
The school in Mile Road, Bedford, is in the process of carrying out a feasibility study in order to develop plans to transform into an Academy.
The proposed Academy will build upon the great progress already made in improving standards by the school. The school will specialise in Science and Technology.
