Bromham Bridge trial closures
23 June 2008
The historic Bromham Bridge which spans the River Great Ouse to the east of Bromham will be subject to two trial closures, with the bridge partially closed to traffic between early June and early August before being totally closed to motorised traffic between early August and mid October 2008.
The decision to carry out the trials follows consultations with local people about options for making the bridge safer and more accessible for pedestrians, as well as protecting the bridge from damage caused by vehicles currently travelling in both directions.
This initial consultation resulted in an even split between people wanting the bridge entirely closed to traffic and those wanting it left open to west-bound traffic only with a number expressing the wish to see the bridge remain as it is.
Based on these opinions, the trial bridge closure dates are as follows:
-
Monday, 2 June to Saturday, 9 August 2008 for one-way traffic (westbound traffic only permitted across the bridge).
-
Monday, 11 August to Sunday, 19 October 2008 for a total closure to all motorised traffic.
Once the second experimental closure finishes on the 19th October, there will be a full public consultation in Bromham and Biddenham until mid November
If following the trials and this second consultation it is considered that the disadvantages to traffic outweigh the benefits of the scheme then the proposals for restricting use of the bridge by traffic will be re-considered.
