Race equality

Promoting race equality

In order to ensure that right across the Council issues of diversity are recognised and addressed correctly, Bedfordshire County Council is implementing the Equality Standard for Local Government.  The Council has developed a Comprehensive Equality and Diversity Policy and a Corporate Equality and Diversity Plan which sets out the way in which the Council is ensuring that issues relating to race, gender, gender reassignment disability, faith religion, belief, age and sexual orientation are taken into account, both in terms of the services we provide and the employment practices that we adopt.

The Race Equality Scheme supports this approach and demonstrates specifically the way in which the Council is promoting race equality and meeting the requirements of the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 to:-

  • Eliminate unlawful racial discrimination;
  • Promote equality of opportunity, and;
  • Promote good relations between people of different racial groups

The Race Equality Scheme Update 2004 and Race Equality Scheme Review 2005 provide further details of the Council's approach and progress.
