Travellers and gypsies

A Multi-Agency Working Group comprising Members of the Local Authorities in Bedfordshire, the police and traveller representatives set up to investigate the issues of unauthorised encampments and a possible shortfall in traveller accommodation had commissioned a study into the needs for accommodation for travellers in Bedfordshire.  The report had concluded that there was some 150 – 200 plots under-provision in Bedfordshire.  The County Council had been working with Mid Beds District Council to identify both permanent and temporary sites for travellers.  Councillor Stay went on to explain how the County Council at its meeting on 29 November 2005 had agreed criteria for identifying potential traveller sites.  This criteria had been put forward by the multi-authority working party and would be used to assist officers in identifying future sites supplemented by the following considerations appropriate to any form of residential development:

  • Any site would be capable of being provided with mains services and suitable access at a reasonable cost.
  • Any site selection to be considered within the context of the policies contained in the relevant approved local plans.
  • Identification of sites must be consistent with approved needs assessments.
