The Parish Before 1086

The earliest known human artefact found in Southill was a light tranchet axe of the Mesolithic| period. This was discovered in Southill Park and is now in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Other than some crop marks in the east of the parish which may, or may not, be ring-ditches or drove-ways indicating possible Neolithic| or Bronze Age| settlement there is no other early evidence of any early community in Southill. No Roman or Anglo-Saxon remains have been found in the parish with the exception of those found by Thomas Inskip at Stanfordbury| in 1832.
