Potton early non conformity

The earliest reference to organised nonconformity in Potton is in January 1716 and comes from the parish archive [P64/7/1] and reads: "Wee John Hensman and Samuel Hensman Protestant Discenters from the Curch of England do hereby certifye that the dwelling of Thomas Lake of Potton…glover (together with the out Houses thereunto belonging) is a Place where […] Gods Permission a Meeting of Protestant Dissenters from the Church of England will be held…"

In the Archdeaconry archive [ABN2] are a number of certificates on nonconformists who do not give specific denominations including: Jeremiah Negus of Potton, plumber and Thomas Clark of Everton, servant of the dwelling of Jeremiah Negus in King Street, Apr 1758; Jeremiah Negus and Thomas Clark of dwelling of Esther Gatward, widow, near Allam Pond, Potton, Apr 1758; Thomas Thorn of Potton, woolcomber and George Gatward of Potton, woolcomber of a malting in King Street, May 1761; William Reynolds, George Emery, John Rogers, James Emery and Edmund Bumbery of a barn of Edmund Bumbery in Potton; John MIller, carpenter, John Rogers, cooper, Elizabeth Rogers, Martha Miller, John Miller, glazier, S.Pedley, Richard Whithead and Martha Norman for a barn of Martha Miller's, Dec 1789
