The Lodge to Keeper's Warren is a pretty little building belonging to the Whitbread Estate. In 1927 Southill was valued under the Rating Valuation Act 1925; every piece of land and building in the country was assessed to determine the rates to be paid on it. The valuer visiting The Lodge [DV1/C32/70] noted that it was occupied by Mrs.Hatton and comprised a parlour, kitchen and two bedrooms; outside were a barn with a copper in it for heating water as well as a wc; water was laid on. The valuer referred to the building, somewhat anachronistically as a bungalow and noted: "V.small. Occupier pays 1/- pr annum retaining fee" otherwise the accommodation was rent free.
