Birth death and marriage certificates - order your copy online

Bedfordshire certificates

 
If you need a copy of a birth|, marriage| or death| certificate for an event that happened in Bedfordshire (please click on the links to download the application forms in pdf format), you should apply to the Bedfordshire Register Office, either by post or in person.
 
Applications for copy certificates are usually processed in one working day from time of receipt.
 
(Online application and purchase will be available in the near future.)
 
All registers for the Bedfordshire District (which covers the whole of Bedfordshire with the exclusion of Luton) dating back to 1837 are held at The Bedfordshire Register Office. These include all registrations prior to 1 May 1999 recorded in the Ampthill, Bedford, Biggleswade, Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard Districts. If the event was registered in the Bedfordshire Registration District (see below for address) cheques should be made payable to Bedfordshire County Council.

Certificates from other Districts

Apply Online:

If you need a copy of a birth, marriage or death certificate from another district, you can apply and purchase one directly online by going to the General Registers Office |website. Please note:  For recent events registered within the last 18 months, applications for certificates should be made to the Register Office in the district where the birth, death or marriage took place.  Applications can take up to 3 weeks to process, depending on demand.

By Post or In Person:

Alternatively, if you need a copy of a birth|, marriage| or death| certificate (please click on the links to download the application forms in pdf format), you can also apply to the Register Office in the District where the event occurred, either by post or in person.

Which Register Office?

To find your local Register Office you can enter the General Register Office website www.gro.gov.uk| and enter your postcode into their search facility or a list of the Register Offices in England and Wales can be purchased using a credit or debit card over the telephone or you can write enclosing a cheque for £8.50 made payable to ONS to:

Required Information & Prices

Birth Certificates

The cost of a copy full birth certificate is £3.50 if the entry is in the current register or £7.00 if the entry is in a closed register; a copy short birth certificate is currently £5.50. You will need to supply the following information:
  • Full name at birth
  • Date and place of birth
  • Full names of both parents
  • Mother's maiden surname

Death Certificates

The cost of a copy death certificate is £3.50 if the entry is in the current register or £7.00 if the entry is in a closed register.
You will need to supply the following information:
  • Name of the deceased
  • Date of death
  • Place of death
  • Applicant's details and relationship to the deceased
  • Reason for application

Marriage Certificates

The cost of a copy marriage certificate is £3.50 if the entry is in the current register or £7.00 if the entry is in a closed register. You will need to supply the following information:
  • Names of both parties
  • Date of marriage
  • Place of marriage (either Register Office or Church)
